Christian Burgsmüller took up the position of EEAS Head of Division of Americas.1 (Regional Affairs) on 1 September 2024.

Previously, Christian served as the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Canada in Ottawa (2020-2024). Other diplomatic postings include assignments as Head of the Global Issues section at the EU Delegation to the US in Washington DC (2010-2014), as Head of the Political and Press section at the EU Delegation to Brazil in Brasilia (2006-2010) and as attaché at the German embassy to Argentina in Buenos Aires (1999).

At EU headquarters in Brussels, Christian served as Cabinet Expert of EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström with responsibility for the US, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand (2014-2019).

Christian joined the European institutions in 2000 and early in his EU career worked on internal market and trade files in the European Commission (2000-2006) before moving to the European External Action Service (EEAS). A lawyer by training, Christian read law in Freiburg im Breisgau, Geneva and Cologne and passed the Bar Exam in Düsseldorf. He holds a Ph.D. in constitutional law from the University of Cologne.
