Mario Cimoli es profesor invitado a la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Xochimilco, Ciudad de México y profesor asociado al Instituto de Economía de la Escuela de Estudios avanzados de Sant’Anna, Pisa (Italia). Previamente, fue Profesor de Economía, en la universidad de Venecia (1992-2018). Entre 2017-2022 fue Secretario Ejecutivo Adjunto de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL). En esta institución, desde 1999 se ha desempeñado como Oficial de Asuntos económicos, Jefe de la Unidad de Innovación y Tecnologías Digitales, Director de la División de Desarrollo Productivo y Empresarial y Oficial a Cargo de la División de Comercio Internacional e Integración. Posee un doctorado de la universidad de Sussex y numerosas publicaciones en revistas académicas especializadas.
